Miss Colorado Blogs

Hi Friends,

Exactly one month ago, I was in Las Vegas for the experience of a lifetime! I was competing for the crown of Miss America 2010, and it was the most amazing, life-changing, wonderful time of my life! I feel so blessed and am so grateful to have made it into the top 12! I hope I made Colorado proud!

I would like to thank the Miss Colorado Organization and Board of Directors, Wayne and Suzi Doland, Katee Mink, Christi Demetrion, Jamie Dukehart-Conti, and all of those who helped with my Miss America preparations and gave me guidance and support. I'd also like to thank my family, all my friends, and Janelle, Stacey, Melaina, Kayla, Caley and Morgan for cheering me on and making me feel so loved!

Every day I was in Las Vegas was memorable, exciting and so much fun! One of my favorite moments was the IHOP breakfast appearance. Flipping pancakes was quite an event, and I must say, I'm pretty good with a spatula! All of the contestants were able to meet some of the children who are part of Children's Miracle Network, and hearing their amazing survival stories was very humbling. It was really inspirational to learn about what they've fought through, and where they're at now in their lives.

I am excited to be back home in Colorado and I am now looking forward to my last 4 months serving as your Miss Colorado. I have had so many experiences that I will always cherish. One of my favorite appearances this year was the Veterans Luncheon at the Rocky Mountain Airspace Museum. At this event, I got to visit with Governor Bill Ritter, Gateway High School ROTC members and Veterans of Americas Armed Forces. While visiting with the veterans, I was truly touched to hear their stories of how they served our country and I felt very blessed to be one of their fellow Americans.

I will also be graduating this spring from the University of Colorado and I will be receiving my degree in Photography, with a minor in Psychology. The scholarship money I have earned through the Miss Colorado and Miss America Organizations have helped to pay for my education and will continue to help me as I pursue my Arts Education License to teach secondary education.

As my year is winding down, I'm excited for workshops to begin and to meet all the new contestants who will be competing for the job of Miss Colorado 2010!

All my best,

Katie Layman

Field trimmed to 15 at Miss America Pageant

LAS VEGAS -- A group of 53 Miss America contestants who took the stage Saturday in Las Vegas to woo a panel of judges has been narrowed to 15 finalists.

The 53 young women - who are from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico - came out on stage at the beginning of the pageant and danced to "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas. Each then introduced themselves to the crowd at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino before the judges, the public and contestants themselves trimmed the field. The pageant caps a week of preliminary competition and will end with the crowning of a winner.

The public voted in Miss Oklahoma Taylor Treat, Miss Arkansas Sarah Slocum and Miss Kentucky Mallory Ervin.

The judges picked Miss Tennessee Stefanie Wittler, Miss Colorado Katie Layman, Miss California Kristy Cavinder, Miss Indiana Nicole Pollard, Miss Hawaii Raeceen Woolford, Miss Louisiana Katherine Putnam, Miss District of Columbia Jennifer Corey, Miss New Mexico Nicole Miner, Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron, Miss Texas Kristen Blair and Miss Nebraska Brittany Jeffers. The contestants themselves then voted in Miss Oregon CC Barber.

Actor and "Extra" host Mario Lopez is hosting the 89-year-old pageant with help from Clinton Kelly of TLC's "What Not to Wear." The pageant is being broadcast live on TLC.

The panel of judges include radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, actress Vivica Fox, musician Dave Koz, Miss America 2002 Katie Harman, gymnast Shawn Johnson and former "American Idol" finalist Brooke White. Comedian Paul Rodriguez was set to be a judge, but organizers said he pulled out because of a family emergency.

The winner, crowned by reigning Miss America Katie Stam, gets a $50,000 scholarship and embarks on a yearlong run with the title to represent the organization and raise awareness for her chosen platform.

Scores based on a week of preliminary competitions will be added to Saturday's swimsuit, talent, evening gown and interview competitions to determine a winner. Each judge will rank their five favorites in order, and their ballots will be used to pick the winner.

Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron, Miss California Kristy Cavinder and Miss Michigan Nicole Blaszczyk each won $2,000 this week for winning talent competitions among three split fields of contestants. Miss Oregon CC Barber, Miss New York Alyse Zwick and Miss Puerto Rico Mimi Pabon each won $1,000 in nightly swimsuit competitions.

Miss Oklahoma Taylor Treat won the $6,000 Quality of Life award, given to the contestant judged to excel most in volunteerism and community service.

In all, the Miss America Organization plans to award $340,000 in scholarships at the national level. The organization says its national, state and local chapters gave more than $45 million last year in cash and scholarships.

The pageant was preceded by a one-hour television special on TLC, "Miss America: Behind the Curtain." The contestants picked 12 women from their own ranks who faced a public vote for a spot among the 15 finalists. The result of that vote will be revealed Saturday night.

Stam, a Seymour, Ind., native, was one of four finalists chosen by viewers last year. This year, the public is choosing three finalists to move onto the swimsuit competition.

The crowning of a Miss America began in 1921 as a publicity stunt to persuade tourists on Atlantic City's Boardwalk to stick around after Labor Day. The bathing revue blossomed in the age of television into an American pop icon before fading in later years and losing it place on network TV in 2004. It moved to the Las Vegas Strip in 2006 in an attempt to reinvent itself and has found a home on cable television.

Auroran pursues crowning glory at Miss America Pageant

Denver Post

Katie Layman is 24, lives in Aurora, studies at the University of Colorado Denver, wants to be a teacher and really wants to be Miss America.

You can watch her on the Miss America Pageant @ 6 p.m. Saturday on the TLC network.

Layman spent the week at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, where the contestants have been rehearsing. "It's been the experience of a lifetime," she says.

And she's done a lot in her lifetime. She's been a Denver Broncos cheerleader, and she's been a Rockette in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Her pageant talent is contemporary lyrical dance. But Layman knows the minefield at a pageant is the Q&A at the end.

She already received a preliminary grilling from Rush Limbaugh and Vivica Fox — and that's a wild duo to pepper you with queries.

Layman is well aware of the famous flub from Miss South Carolina at the Miss Teen USA 2007 pageant. Here's Caitlin Upton's answer to a question about why one-fifth of Americans can't find the United States on a map. It's been viewed more than 35 million times on YouTube: "I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children."

Layman says, "They can ask you anything they want. You just have to be honest and go with your heart. It's really something when you are on that stage and the whole world is watching. It can go either way."

So good luck kid. We'll be watching, and 50 friends and family members will be waving Colorado flags and cheering in the audience.

Was crowned Miss Colorado Galaxy 2009 (also won “Best In Swimsuit”, “Best In Evening Gown” and “Most Photogenic”)

About the Director of Studio 21 Dance:

Jessica has been teaching dance in Denver since 1993 and studying dance for over 20 years. During this time she has studied with some of the best in the industry, including Mia Michaels, Shane Sparks, Dave Scott, Brian Friedman, Michael Chambers and Sarah Schachterle, current choreographer for the Rockstarz. During high school, Jessica danced for two seasons on her school’s nationally ranked varsity pom pom team. Following graduation she danced for one season with the Colorado Rapids Cheerleaders and three seasons with the Denver Nuggets Dancers. During her time with the Nuggets, Jessica spent two seasons as the female lead in the Batman Stunt Show, fighting and falling off buildings! In 2007, she was crowned Mrs. Colorado International 2007 & is the current Mrs. Bear Creek. Through her work as Mrs. Colorado International, Jessica became an ambassador for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. To further her work and enable other title winners to make the most of their title, Jessica founded a charity networking organization called “The Queen’s Angels” . In 2008 she created the community organization “Project 21; After School, For School”. Project 21 takes the Studio 21 message of “2 Parts Drive, 1 Part Dream” into schools and uses dance to teach life skills and goal setting.

As Jessica’s interests continue to evolve, in 2008 Jessica competed in her first NPC Figure competition, placing 3rd in her division. Following her first love of teaching, in 2006 Jessica became the Director of Dance Education at Peak Athletics Plus in Highlands Ranch. Here she learned from the best on everything from marketing to studio administration. After putting together her first recital in 2007 and seeing the personal growth of her students, she decided it was time to realize her life-long dream of taking her vision into a studio of her own. As Mrs. Colorado International, Jessica found her voice as a role model for today’s youth and wanted to take her message of Integrity and Positive Self Talk into the studio and use dance to teach goal setting. As the studio motto says “2 Parts Drive, 1 Part Dream”, Jessica wanted to give her students the opportunity to succeed through life skill training and character development.

Miss Jessica is the mother of two beautiful children, Devin - age 9 & Nicky - age 3. Both are dancing fools who will surely be seen in the studio! Jessica has a diverse background including dance performance & instruction, pageantry, fitness competition, personal training & choreography, as well as an associates degree in psychology. Studio 21 has been Jessica’s dream since she was a little girl, but it was her children that inspired her to create a studio that not only teaches dance technique, but also positive self talk and skills to succeed in life. As a dancer and a mother, she wanted to create a place for young dancers, former dancers and aspiring dancers of all ages.

Ms. Planet Beach Colorado Rita Case Blogs

Ms. Planet Beach Colorado, Rita Case, shares her experience at the International Spokesmodel competition, held this year at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Wow! What a BLAST!! As a member of the Belles Performance Team it was my honor to represent Planet Beach, one of my favorite sponsors as Ms. Planet Beach Denver, CO at their International Spokesmodel competition. The pageant was held at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. Over 65 women competed for the $100,000 prize and the opportunity to open their own Planet Beach franchise.

I felt like a rockstar as I was greeted by a limo and TV crews upon my arrival at the airport. During the week I participated in several photoshoots and filmed interviews to be apart of the "Making of Ms. Planet Beach." The show will air in early 2009. Be sure to look for it!

After a week of rehearsals and preliminary competitions I was excited for the final show to arrive. Every contestant was able to model her costume representing their idea of Rock and Glamour (the theme of the pageant), as well as her swimsuit and a designer fashion outfit.

In the end I was left out of the final 12, but I was honored to have placed in the top 10 in the online People's Choice Awards.

The highlight of the evening for me was receiving the "Best YouTube" award. All of the contestants were asked to create a video describing their favorite Planet Beach Contempo Spa experience. I of course couldn't name just one, and had to mention the aqua massage bed, the Lumiere facial, the hydration station, oh, and of course I can't forget the Mystic Tan! You can check out my video on the Planet Beach website www.planetbeach.com. A very special thank you goes out to Cher Fox, Owner of the Belles Performance Team, and the current Ms. Planet Beach Gen X Colorado, for all of her help in making the video.

DBC named Miss Colorado 2008

A Crowning Achievement
By Jake Grilley
DenverBroncos.com
June 26, 2008

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.-- As a Denver Broncos Cheerleader, Jamie Dukehart-Conti knows the importance of accessories. What would the Broncos Cheerleaders be without pom poms and cowboy boots? Last weekend Dukehart-Conti earned two other accessories, a sash and a crown.

She is Miss Colorado 2008, and the newly-crowned pageant winner is still trying to grasp the actuality of achieving her dream.

"It was so exciting," Dukehart-Conti said of being named this year's Miss Colorado. "It was the same when my name was called at Broncos additions for the first time. When you hear your name called it is kind of overwhelming. It takes a few days for it to sink in."

This was Dukehart-Conti's third year competing at Miss Colorado. She placed fourth overall each of the previous two years.

Instead of letting her finishes get her down, Dukehart-Conti saw not being named Miss Colorado as another opportunity and more time to become involved and prepare.

She used her title as Miss Denver and later as Miss Broomfield to invest her time and efforts to the community. Dukehart-Conti was heavily involved in promoting and organizing the Red Ribbon Week campaign, a program geared towards promoting a drug-free lifestyle to elementary and middle school students.

Over the past year both as a Broncos Cheerleader and Miss Denver, Dukehart-Conti volunteered over 1700 hours of community service.

"It was a really great opportunity and experience," she said. "It really demonstrates that you are invested in the organization and the community."

Dukehart-Conti is quick to dispel notions that Miss Colorado is strictly a beauty pageant.

"The swimsuit component and beauty factor are parts of the competition but that is just one component of the competition," she said. "I spent a lot more time on my community service than I did on my swimsuit walk. It is just part of of it. It is a total package and there are so many things that we do."

Part of her responsibly as pageant contestant and now as Miss Colorado is serving as a role model to young girls.

"I love children and I love being able to interact with them," she said.

Children are an integral part of Dukehart-Conti's life. When she isn't spending her time as a nanny, the Colorado State graduate with a certificate in elementary education helps to instruct kids through the Denver Broncos Junior Cheerleaders and the Miss Colorado Princess Mentoring Program.

As Miss Colorado Dukehart-Conti plans on continuing her efforts in promoting drug free awareness. In addition she will focus on advocating the organization's platform the Children's Miracle Network, an organization established to help fund improvements to medical facilities and healthcare for children, and her own personal platform of Investing in Miracles Changing Lives with Change, focused on gathing small donations in an effort to help enrich children's lives.

The exposure of being a Broncos Cheerleader in addition to being Miss Colorado brings with it opportunities that Dukehart-Conti is excited to embrace.

"I am so excited about what the partnership will be able to bring," she said. "I am so lucky to have so many great partnerships established between both organizations. Both organizations will open doors for each other."

Dukehart-Conti said she couldn't ask for a more supportive group of women than her fellow cheerleaders.

"Everyone has been so supportive and excited for me," she said. "They know that I have been involved and working for this for the entire year and it wasn't something I just did on a whim. They understand what having the title entails."

Dukehart-Conti will be representing both the Broncos and Colorado at the national level when she participates in the Miss America reality television series which will begin taping in September and October and during the Miss America Pageant in January.

And although her life now has added responsibilities and obligations to fulfill as Miss Colorado, Dukehart-Conti isn't forgoing her responsibilities as a Broncos Cheerleader.

"I am committed to the team 110 percent," she said. "I'll be out there on the sidelines."
